King of Prussia is named for an 18th century local tavern named “King of Prussia Inn” which was named for King Frederick the Great, of Prussia. The King of Prussia Inn was originally a quaint cottage that was converted to an inn in 1769. The inn was very successful during colonial times when travel was accomplished on horseback. The inn was typically the first nights stay on the road for those headed west to Ohio. General Washington visited the tavern on Thanksgiving Day in 1977 while the Continental Army was encamped nearby until moving on to Valley Forge. The inn was moved to make way for the expansion of US Route 202, a  major north-south highway. The inn was relegated to sit on a median island for years, sealed-up and surrounded by a high fence. King of Prussia Inn was relocated in 2000 and then once again reopened to the public in 2002. The King of Prussia Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places.
