Washington Square Philadelphia Homes for Sale

The neighborhood of Washington Square is one of the five original planned squares laid out in Philadelphia's grid, by city planner William Penn in 1682. Washington Square is a 6.4 acre park and part of the Washington Square West and Society Hill neighborhoods. Since 2005, Washington Square has been managed by the National Park Service and is now part of Independence National Historical Park. This remarkable area has a long history, and in the 18th century animals grazed on the property. In the early 1800’s, fashionable neighborhoods were built around the picturesque square, and the park was named Washington Square in 1825, in tribute to General George Washington.

Not only does the park have an interesting history, it also has abundant natural beauty. Conscious tree planting efforts have made the park what is is today, a beautiful oasis in a bustling city. It is home to unique features, including the “sycamore moon tree” which was grown from seeds that were carried to the moon and back on the Apollo 14 mission. Washington Square West is a popular neighborhood near the park, and is a very desirable residential community with diverse shops, restaurants, coffee houses and a very hip vibe. Other points of interest in the area include antique stores, the Pennsylvania Hospital, the oldest hospital in the nation, and the Washington Square Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The historic district is comprised of 450 buildings that fall within a 41 acres grid.

With all of these remarkable features and points of interest, it should come as no surprise that Washington Square is a popular destination among prospective homebuyers.
