Point Breeze is a remarkable neighborhood in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood roughly bounded by 25th Street to the west, Broad Street to the east, Washington Avenue to the north and Mifflin Street to the south. Neighboring communities include Southwest City Center to the north and Passyunk Square to the east. This charming community has an interesting history that dates back to the 1860s when oil refining was the major business in the area. Oil that had been drilled in western Pennsylvania was processed in Point Breeze, shipped down the Schuylkill River to Delaware, and then out to sea.
The area of Point Breeze was settled predominately by working-class European-Jewish immigrants, followed by Irish and Italian immigrants. African Americans began moving into the area in the 1930s in what was known as “The Great Migration,” as many moved from the south to escape Jim Crow laws. Over the years, Point Breeze has gone through revitalization and gentrification with numerous businesses moving into the area and focused efforts being made by local organizations to beautify this delightful community. Today residents enjoy great shopping, dining, entertainment and recreation opportunities, as well as excellent schools run by the School District of Philadelphia. All in all, Point Breeze is a beautifully diverse community with a long list of features and amenities sure to impress even the most discerning of homebuyers.
Real estate in the community of Point Breeze is primarily made up of condominiums, townhomes and row houses. While most of the houses in Point Breeze are attached, there are a few stand alone homes. Many of the row houses here are older and historical in nature, and some are very affordable and in need loving care, perfect for the first time home buyer who is interested in renovation, restoration and preservation. That said, many of the homes in Point Breeze have already been restored and are move-in ready. One of the many advantages to buying a home in this community is it boasts some of the largest units available anywhere in the Philadelphia Metropolitan region. Many homes here have five and six bedrooms that are spread out over three levels. Additionally, many Point Breeze homes have beautiful rooftop terraces that provide sweeping views of the city.
